4 Easy Steps to Learning to Cook

When asked if you can cook is your answer “yes?”? That was me three and a half years ago! Now I am comfortable cooking for guests. If you can’t confidently say “yes,” you can’t really cook, by the way, but you can learn! A better question is, “Do you have skill in cooking?” Before teaching myself to cook, I was insecure about the process of learning. For many this stops them from trying, but I have outlined the basic steps for improving your proficiency in the kitchen. If I knew what it took to be confident in cooking, I would have been more eager to teach myself before I spent…

    Intervention: Addicted to Breastfeeding

I should have known what I was in for when you came out of the womb and went straight for my breast. You nursed for 45 minutes! I was smitten and so proud. Once we were home, I cheerfully raised your helpless body up to my chest. Daddy helped you learn where your mouth should be. I swooned at your gulps and sighs of bliss. Everyday you were home with me and I fed you. I happily spent my days dispensing and collecting milk because you were so precious. You knew I was your lifeline and rewarded me with your affection. Watching you be so tender and sweet and dependent upon me…

    Budget Hacks

One of the side effects of quitting a job is having less income. Surprise, surprise. Prior to obtaining the job I just left, we were living on E-4 (specialist) pay. I didn’t like it. As soon as I started working I commenced the bougie behaviors I had been forced to deny myself. Now we will be living on E-5 (sergeant) pay but with extra expenditures like diapers. Could be a recipe for disaster. Never to be outdone, I have spent some time hacking our spending in hopes of finding money in our pockets as is. It is not a secret that people tend to increase their standard of living to…

    7 Ways to Make Friends

One of the hurdles of being a military spouse is having to make friends as an adult. The younger you are the easier it is, but at some point you won’t be 21 and able just find friends based on who likes to go out. When I moved away to St. Louis, MO after college, I had to make an effort to make friends in a city with people who weren’t interested in making friends because they still had theirs from high school. When I moved to Fort Bragg, I was used to the routine and used some of the same methods I had tried before. Now I would say…

    Site Update

At the beginning of June I migrated from wordpress.com to self-hosting. I basically went from blogging lite to the paid version. I started talking to a designer I found on Facebook Marketplace who was going to maintain my site for $50/month. After I finally got the site content migrated to the new host (a two-week debacle), he informed me he would have to host my site or I would need to pay $500 for a one time service. Because I needed to be able to cut ties with him if I wasn’t happy with his work, I did not want him to host my site. At Youtube’s suggestion, I decided…

I Lost My Child’s Social Security Card and I’m Still Killing the Game

I called the DEERS office Friday before my appointment on Monday to verify what time it was since I never received an email. “Wilson?” “No, Weldon. W-E-L-D-O-N.” “Oh, okay… I don’t see any appointments. Wellons, right?” This went on for over a minute. Since changing my last name, I had never had trouble spelling it for people, which is what I liked about it after growing up with a name evident of my Nigerian roots. She didn’t have an appointment for me even though I had called a week prior, but she put us in another slot on Monday and told me to bring the baby’s birth certificate. Here comes…

Weight Loss Tips for Lazy People

Last month my husband stopped me from eating my last bite of chocolate cake. “You’re eating chocolate cake? You had Chick-Fil-A this morning. Did you eat all those chicken minis?” Yes, I did eat the chicken minis in addition to the sausage and egg burrito and hash browns. Some women wouldn’t appreciate their partners questioning their eating habits but a few weeks prior, I had specifically asked my husband to judge me for my food choices. He didn’t because I wasn’t in the ‘danger zone.’ This evening I was in the danger zone. Memorial Day weekend I made a Pinterest poke cake and frozen half to possibly take to a…
